Frequently Asked Questions

How should the word ex-libris be written?

Ex-libris derives from the Latin word Library. Latin is written with a hyphen (Ex-libris). It is also used as Exlibris without hyphen. It is known and used as Bookplate in English. In recent years, as in Balkan countries, it is also written as Ekslibris in Turkey. Exlibris is easier to read. Now, just like the words Fax, Ekselans, Ekstra, Ekspresyonizm, the transformation has taken place and the use of Ex-libris has become widespread. Ex-libris is also accepted in international competitions. It is also possible to write “from the bookshelf of …”, which is the exact equivalent of Ex-libris.

I want to order an ex-libris, what should I do?

An ex-libris is used either to fulfil its actual function, i.e. to be pasted into a book, or to be exchanged. Of course, it can also be framed and hung on the wall as a work of art. The choice of the artist, the technique, the size of the ex-libris and the purpose for which it is to be made are important in the ordering process. First of all, you should determine the artist whose style you like. You may have the opportunity to find and get to know artists and designers at exhibitions, ex-libris congresses, websites or social media. You should contact the artist whose works you like and tell him/her your expectations and interests. You should explain what kind of motif you want to have on your exlibris. After discussing the fee, the artist makes drafts for you, reproduces the one you like and signs it. You have the right to ask for revision on the draft you like. If you only want to stick your ex-libris on the book, 40 to 100 copies are enough. However, if you want to make a change, it is useful to have more prints. For those who have a large book collection, the printing house can print 1000 copies of the original ex-libris on sticker paper and stick them to their books. This type of offset reproduction only fulfils its function and collectors do not prefer it.

If you want to have an ex-libris that is original, special to you and contains aesthetic values, it is useful to work with an experienced artist who has proven himself in this field. The result will both make you happy and give you the opportunity to boast. However, recently, more economical ex-libris in the form of stamps are also made by printing houses and some people. If you prefer it, it is useful to check whether the work done to you is used elsewhere and whether it is original or not.

Can I order ex-libris on behalf of someone else?

Ex-libris is the most beautiful thing you can present to your loved ones, especially on their birthdays. Especially if you make an ex-libris for someone you know and know their interests, it will be accepted with interest and happiness because it is a special work for them.

How many types of ex-libris can one person have?

You can have any number and variety of ex-libris you want. In the past, you may like nature-themed ex-libris, while in recent years you may like mythology or other subjects. Why not have a new ex-libris?

How much does an ex-libris cost?

This depends on the reputation of the artist, the technique and the number of prints. For an edition of 100 copies of an original design, you can expect to pay between 350 euros and 1000 euros.

How should I glue the ex-libris to my books?

Gluing with adhesives such as glue is not recommended. It will prevent a collector from buying that ex-libris to collect it years later, it will tear. Ideally, you can use paper stickers, double-sided adhesive tapes or you can use starch adhesive that you prepare yourself. You may come across ex-libris belonging to different people in one book. The owner of the book has changed.

Which paper should be used for printing ex-libris?

There is no rule for this. Not every design shows itself on every paper. Different papers suitable for printing technique can be used. Şöhler, Kanson papers are suitable for digital prints. Bristol for high prints and screen printing, absorbent, slightly thicker gravure papers are used for gravure printing. Ex-libris can also be printed on beautiful handmade paper. File paper or coloured cardboard should not be preferred.

Should different sizes of ex-libris be used for different book sizes?

Considering small-sized books, it is recommended that the long side of the ex-libris printing area should not be larger than 13 cm and the paper on which it is printed (A5) should not be larger than 21×15 cm. This is especially stated in competitions. As well as 1 cm ex-libris, of course, there are also ex-libris in a size that can be glued to large books, for example 15×15 cm ex-libris. Since the collections are stored in A5 boxes in museums, it is useful to take care that the paper size is no larger than A5.

Is there ex-libris collecting? How can I become a collector? How can I make an exchange?

Ex-libris are evaluated according to countries, artists, techniques, styles and even patterns and are collected by many enthusiasts. Collectors exchange the duplicate prints they have with other people, thus acquiring a large number of ex-libris. Their aim in these exchanges is to improve their own collections both in terms of quality and in terms of number. As a result of their collecting activities, they also learn about the art and printing technology of different periods. These small prints must be signed by the artist. It must be stated when, how many and with which technique they were printed. Aesthetic integrity, text placement and technical competence are important issues that collectors pay attention to.

Collectors collect ex-libris on a wide range of subjects according to their interests and place orders with artists who work on the subjects they are interested in. It is known that collectors classify and collect ex-libris on heraldry, professions, work environments, home interiors, weapons, clothes, music, musical instruments, books, libraries, printing workshops, architecture, engineering, medicine, art, mythology, astrology, sports, theatre, dance, nude, women, children, portraits, typography, calligraphy, monograms, erotica, word games, botany, zoology, ceremonies, war, death and many similar subjects.

Collectors store and present their ex-libris in different ways. Ex-librises are usually stored by pasting them on standard cards. These cards are A4 in size and may include the name of the artist, year of birth and death, country, association of which he/she is a member, printing technique of the ex-libris, year of production, total number, and the name of the owner.

Another way of storing ex-libris is enveloping or boxing. They can be stored in appropriately sized envelopes and boxes, categorised according to artists, techniques, countries, periods or subjects. Despite the difficulty in presentation and examination, boxing is the best method to protect ex-libris against wear and tear.

Experienced collectors are usually happy to help beginners by giving them a few ex-libris. In order to accumulate ex-libris, it is necessary to be in contact with artists and collectors, to request the exchange of excess copies from the artist whose work you are interested in, and to take part in exchanges at congresses. Of course, you can also increase your collection by purchasing from the internet, for example from ebay.com https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1313&_nkw=exlibris&_sacat=0 or from artists.

How should I send the ex-libris in a mail exchange?

Ex-libris should have the necessary information on the back. The artist’s name, country, date of creation, subject, technique, edition number and opus number, if known, should be written in pencil on the back. Some collectors may also include exchange lists in their letters. In order to prevent wrinkles and fraying when exchanging letters, either a cardboard envelope should be used or a suitable cardboard should be placed inside the envelope. Considering the risk of loss, it is useful to send letters by registered mail.

Where should the ex-libris be placed in the book?

The correct placement is in the centre of the inside of the book cover. If the stamp is an ex-libris, it can of course also be printed on the first page.

What is PF?

“Pour Féliciter” or “Pro Felicitate” means “for happiness”. PF is an abbreviation of these words. They are artistically designed personalised greeting cards for the New Year. In contrast to their ex-libris, PFs often have a contemporary historical reference and are therefore a historically interesting collecting area.

What is Ex-libris?
Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş*

Ex-libris is a branch of art that introduces and glorifies the book owner. Ex-libris are small-sized prints that book lovers paste on the inside cover of their books, with their names and pictures on different subjects. It literally means from …’s library, belonging to …’s library. It is the business card or title deed of the book. It introduces and glorifies the owner of the book and warns the borrower to return it. Ex-libris is an important communication tool. Although it was born as a necessity graphic, they are original works made with aesthetic concerns.

It brings art between people’s hands, into books, and makes them feel its mesmerising warmth.
Ex-librises are made to order for the living person or institution, reflecting their characteristics.
When we look at the creation process, it is seen that all the possibilities of the art of painting are used. When we look at its functional side, it can be considered as a graphic design product.

It is known that the first and oldest example of ex-libris was made on a tile in 1400 BC and was attached to the chests containing the papyrus rolls of the Egyptian king Amenhophis III.

In 1450, the first ex-libris on paper was made for the German priest Johannes Knabenberg, known by the nickname “Igler” (hedgehog). The ex-libris depicting a hedgehog biting a flower reads “Hans Igler can kiss you”.

Ex-libris in the real sense started to be made with the invention of the printing press.

Later, ex-libris began to be used not only for pasting on books, but also as objects of accumulation and exchange. It ceased to be a book-specific sign and became independent as an original graphic work.

From the 19th century onwards, associations began to publish bulletins, books, address lists and organise competitions for the exchange.

The long side of the ex-libris should not be larger than 13 cm. and should be reproduced and numbered as in printmaking. For reproduction, engraving/C3, wood printing/X2, linoleum printing/X3, lithography/L, serigraphy/S, offset/P7, photography/P8, computer-aided design/CGD are used.

Ex-libris in Turkey has been recognised with books bought from the West. Books with ex-libris, which are widely used in European countries, came to our country through second-hand sales, and when the owners of the books died, they were donated to libraries by their relatives or sold to booksellers.

Although the seals seen on manuscripts and printed books from the Ottoman period are accepted as a sign of ownership, they do not belong to the ex-libris type. However, with their unique calligraphic structures, they fulfilled this function as the coat of arms or logo of the people they belonged to.

In our country, since the 2000s, young people who make ex-libris have started to be trained especially in institutions where art and design education is given. Ex-libris design is taught as a course in 7 universities, including Istinye University. Universities and municipalities organise ex-libris competitions. Artists now open solo exhibitions and win awards in international competitions. There are 27 postgraduate theses on ex-libris. The only thing that is lacking is ex-libris collecting.

Nowadays, our artists and designers open personal ex-libris exhibitions, participate in international competitions and receive awards. The biggest deficiency in our country is ex-libris collecting.

Founded in Ankara in 1997, the Ex-libris Association now continues its activities in Istanbul. One of the 10 museums in the world, Istanbul Ex-libris Museum, with its collection of over 12,500 ex-libris, is located at Selçuk Ecza Holding, Altunizade, Mahir İz Cad. 45 Üsküdar address, awaits the interest of art lovers.

Ex-libris exhibitions have been held in 14 cities in our country and in Germany, Belgium, Belarus, China, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Canada and Russia.

Five international ex-libris competitions have been organised and the XXXIIIth FISAE International Ex-libris Congress was held in 2010 with the participation of 280 people from 40 countries.

The Art of Ex Libris Comes to Life in the Heart of Istanbul.

The 6th International Ex Libris Competition and 2nd International Ex Libris Congress, organised in collaboration with İstinye University, Selçuk Ecza Deposu, Bozlu Art Project and the Istanbul Ex Libris Association, and hosted by İstinye University, took place at the Vadi H Campus. At the end of the evaluation, 15 Awards, 14 Honourable Mentions and 28 Certificates of Honour were presented. The exhibition featured 238 original ex libris.

The First Prize of İstinye University was unanimously awarded to the master Russian artist Mikhail Verkholantsev, whose works were found to be original and persuasive in their personal style. The Second Prize of Selçuk Ecza Deposu was awarded to the Bulgarian artist Onnik Karanfilian for his engraved ex-libris featuring powerful designs. The Third Prize from Bozlu Art Project was awarded to Bulgarian artist Marin Gruev for his ex libris filled with fine details. The Istanbul Ex Libris Association Young Artist Award was deemed appropriate for Emre İnan, a promising young artist specialising in printmaking. The Medical Park Special Award went to Igor Baranov (France), the AveA Health Special Award to Ivo Mosele (Italy), the Liv Hospital Special Award to Christine Deboosere (Belgium), the Glana Cosmetics Special Award to Valerio Mezzetti (Italy), The Tülay-Şükrü Ertürk Special Award went to Wang Yu (China), the Ayşe-Noyan Ünal Special Award to Martin R. Baeyens (Belgium), the Ayfer-Zeki Tutkan Special Award to Gennady Vial (Belarus), the Özden Pektaş Turgut Special Award to Elzbieta Radzikowska (Poland), Gülcan-Salih Apaydın Special Award to Yulia Protsyshyn (Ukraine), Hatice-Hasip Pektaş Special Award to Julieta Virginia Warman (Argentina), Can Pektaş Special Award to Konstantin Kalynovych (Ukraine).

It is hoped that this international exhibition will bring excitement to the world of ex-libris, inspire young people interested in ex-libris in particular, and contribute to the spread of this art form. The competition exhibition can be viewed at İstinye University’s Vadi H Campus until 22 September 2025.

The Meeting Point of Culture and Art

Over 50 artists from Argentina, Russia, Bulgaria, China, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Belgium and Turkey participated in the 2nd International Ex Libris Congress. At the congress, held at İstinye University’s Vadi H Campus, artists exchanged ex-libris, took new ex-libris orders, engaged in cultural exchange, and strengthened their friendships. As part of the congress, participants visited historical sites in Istanbul, took a Bosphorus tour, visited the Istanbul Ex-Libris Museum, and attended a Gala Dinner.

The conference and competition were organised under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş, Faculty Member at the Faculty of Communication at İstinye University, President of the Istanbul Ex Libris Association, and Director of the Istanbul Ex Libris Museum. In his opening speech, Pektaş shared the following information: “We have held six international competitions, organised two international congresses, and opened ex-libris exhibitions in 15 cities and eight different countries. We established the Istanbul Ex-Libris Museum within the Selçuk Ecza Deposu, one of ten museums in the world. These are things to be proud of for our country. The fact that ex libris is taught as a course at seven universities, including İstinye University, and that 29 postgraduate theses have been written on ex libris is also an indication of the interest in this field.”

Rector Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş emphasised the importance of art in his speech: “As we examine the art of ex-libris, we see that it is not just a calling card; it is a living art that reflects an understanding of society, culture and life. As a university, we continue to pursue our vision of being an institution that not only protects and promotes science and research, but also art. Here, we are delighted to share art and culture with participants from different countries. In the words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, we must attach greater importance to art than ever before in order to raise generations that are free in thought, free in knowledge, and free in conscience.”

Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş thanked all stakeholders for their support of the arts and continued: “If a society is deprived of art, it is as if one of its arteries has been severed. We continue our efforts to support art and artists. We would like to thank M. Sonay Gürgen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Selçuk Ecza Deposu, Dr. Şükrü Bozluolcay, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bozlu Holding, and Adem Elbaşı, President of our Centennial Group, for their support during this process. We are grateful to all our artists, academics, guests, and partners for their efforts.”

Part 1) I am very happy and grateful to have been able to participate in the Congress of EX LIBRIS in Istanbul. August 20th to 23rd / 2025.

Organized by Professor Hasip Pektas and his great team from İstinye University Vadi H Campus in Istanbul. Share all day together with Recording Artists, Ex-librarians, Collectors, and now friends, on this beautiful path of Ex Libris. I am very grateful to my loved ones who have always supported me and grateful to life ⭐ Julieta Warman (Argentina)

Yesterday, 23.08.2025, was a very busy day. In the morning we gathered at İstinye Üniversitesi Vadi H Yerleşkesi, from there we went on a tour of the Bosphorus. It was fantastically beautiful. After the Bosphorus, we visited the Istanbul Ex-Libris Museum, where we saw a collection of ex-librises of famous artists of the world. And again we talked about the art of ex-libris. Before the Gala Dinner, we were shown an exhibition of ex-libris dedicated to the theme of “Medicine”. The artists, who came from different countries, became close friends during these few days of the 2nd International Congress in Istanbul and did not want to part. Until next time, friends! Good luck to you always!

Fulfilling another dream which is a great gift for my half century of life!
Dear Hasip, I am extremely delighted to have met you at the Istanbul Conference. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you, your family, and your team for the tremendous efforts you put into making the conference a great success. From the meticulous preparation to the on – site services, we deeply felt your dedication and enthusiasm, which made the whole conference extremely warm.

Although I didn’t exchange many works at this conference, I still feel very happy and satisfied with this experience. Here, I not only reunited with old friends I haven’t seen for a long time, but also got to know several friendly and enthusiastic Turkish friends, including you. Your kindness has given me a special affection for this city. After the conference, we stayed in Istanbul for a few days. We not only tasted the local delicious food, but also purchased some regional – characteristic items such as porcelain plates, carpets, and coffee. During our strolls, we truly felt the profound cultural heritage and unique historical and humanistic charm of Turkey.

In addition, I am particularly grateful to you for generously giving me several of your works. Each piece is full of your sincere feelings, and I cherish them very much. Here, I have a small request: if you have time, I hope to invite you to create a work with the theme of “Man and Pet”. If it can be achieved, I will be extremely grateful.

Enclosed are the photos I took of you during the conference. I hope these images can preserve this beautiful memory for us. At the same time, I would like to trouble you to share the photos you took of us during the conference with me. Thank you for your help. By the way, among the works you gave me, there is one whose author information I haven’t been able to find out. If you know, I hope you can tell me.

Finally, I sincerely invite you and your family to travel to China when it is convenient for you. If you have such a plan, please let me know in advance. In particular, I hope to have the opportunity to invite you to visit Dalian, our city, and show you the unique scenery and human – cultural atmosphere of this coastal city.

Wish you and your family good health, a smooth life, and all the best! Best regards,

Wang Ying (China)

Martin R. Baeyens is an active painter, graphic artist and designer. He has held 130 individual exhibitions in Belgium and other countries. Participated in 1298 group exhibitions worldwide. He has won 213 prizes in international competitions. He has an important and special place in the ex-libris world. To date, he has designed 986 ex-libris, mostly silkscreen and CGD.

Nature is at the center of his artworks. He seeks a balance between technology and nature and therefore uses electronic circuit printing plates. He also specializes in freehand graphics. He prints his works himself with screen printing, a technique in which he is a perfectionist.

For 40 years he worked as a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Ghent University. He has been a guest lecturer at the Frans Masereel Graphics Centre in Belgium, at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, USA and at various universities in China, Turkey, Northern Cyprus and Poland. He was invited to Barcelona, Lisbon, Krakow and Limerick academies for Erasmus. https://martinbaeyens.wixsite.com/portfolio

Could you tell us a little about yourself? When did you become interested in ex-libris?

I will tell first a story. I made my very first ex libris under pressure of my teacher, Gerard Gaudaen, in the relief printing technique: an abstract wood engraving. Later when I visited an exchange meeting for the very first time nobody showed any interest in my new approach. It was a very frustrating experience for a young artist. A few years later my first silkscreen ex libris met with the same reaction …and so did my first CGD ex libris. From these experiences it is very clear that the new always frightens the public and that it prefers to stick to traditional techniques. . . Until now I’ve realized more than 986 ex-libris!

What is your artistic approach and sources of inspiration?

All my artistic activities are equally important in my work. Currently, major art integration projects in public buildings are my favorite. Painting, graphics work and creating ex libris are the ones who are as important. I also do not have the preference for some graphics techniques, but it is important that they are up to date. And of course, the use of the computer is inevitable.

During my career I tried out almost all graphic techniques. Screen printing and computer-aided design are for the moment the techniques I use most frequently now. They are representative for our time and provide new opportunities.

Two elements come always back in my work. First, nature as indispensable but also technology is important in our lives. I try to find a harmony between these important elements in our lives. In a modern world, one can’t exist without the other. I symbolize our contemporary world by using painting and printing on original circuit boards and multilayer bases.

UNPRECEDENTED NETWORKS 62 ACRYL / MULTI LAYER BASIS 45 X 43 2022

What do you think is the social and cultural significance of the ex-libris?

The ex libris retains its functional purpose as a property right for the owner of the book, but increases its artistic significance as art.

What would you like to say about collecting bookplates?

Follow your own way. Collected what you like and not what other collectors tell you what to collect.

2.The artistic value is the only true value of a graphic work. Money not always what’s good. A big name can make sometimes inferior work.

Encourage young artists.

Let the artist keep his own character.

stay up to day

What are the differences between traditional and digital bookplate design?

Nevertheless, each design process is always the same in traditional or even contemporary techniques. It proves that new ways can always be discovered and that not all possibilities have been explored. It shows young artists that they can find their own place in the world of art, on the condition that they are prepared to search for it.

What do you foresee for bookplate art in the future?

Times change and we cannot compare the current situation with the past. In the evolution of the ex libris, not only the graphic possibilities have been expanded, but also the style has evolved over time. The ex libris, however, retains its function as property rights and still belongs on the first page of the book. In addition, it has now also become a collector’s item for collectors of mini graphics.

EX LIBRIS for M. SONAY GÜRGEN CGD 96 X 96 2022

What is your experience in art, what do you want to tell?

As a child, I dreamed of teaching in a school of art. A dream that lasted for 40 years. Even now, I am happy to give guest lectures and workshops. A privilege that I could make worldwide in thirty universities. Teaching makes it special because you come in contact, with more different values and in a total other culture. They are very grateful that you want to pass your knowledge and that is of course the essence of education.

Can you tell us about your work and experiences in Turkey?

I have been fortunate to exhibit my work regularly in Turkey. Also, my workshops and lectures at various universities were well attended and successful. But more importantly I have gained a brother in this country. Thank you Birader Hasip Pektas

Hasip Pektaş

Onnik Karanfilyan was born in 1963. In 1982 he graduated with honours from the National High School of Arts ‘Tsanko Lavrenov’. In 1988 and 1994 he studied in the workshop of Prof. Stoyan Stoyanov – Techi at the National Academy of Arts in Sofia. He is one of the first artists to combine classical printmaking techniques such as engraving and lithography with computer graphics. His works are exhibited in various museums. He has many awards. He won the third prize at the 1st International Printmaking Biennial held in Turkey in 2008, and Selçuk Ecza Deposu won the second prize at the 6th International Ex-libris Competition in 2025. He lives and works in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Could you tell us a little about yourself? When did you become interested in bookplates? (Tell us about your success in the graphic design competition in Turkey.)

I can say that I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I started by redrawing pictures from postage stamps, as well as comic book characters, mainly from the French magazine “PIF”. In the first grade I started collecting stamps and coins because they were very beautiful, I was fascinated by how they were created. My grandmother, who graduated from a French college, gave me all kinds of books with illustrations that I tried to redraw. That was when I first encountered graphics that illustrated old books, and I learned about bookplates from my cousin Armand Basmajyan at the National Library when I was a student at the art high school. The first bookplate I created was for my grandfather Onnik Karanfilyan, who graduated from an American college in Konya, Turkey. Since I was a child, I have loved miniatures that are based on ancient coins, as well as old engravings in which the detail is perfect. The first bookplates that I saw in the National Library 43 years ago inspired me to create a similar image. Thus began my love for small graphics and bookplates. Success in a given field, in this case graphics, comes after enormous work, after thousands of drawings over the years, which train not only the hand, but also the mind. Every time I set myself new tasks when I set out to create a given bookplate, graphics, painting. In the case of the competition, the task I set myself was to create a metaphor for the time in which we lived, are living and will live through the human body. Therefore, I tried to make it perfect and to convey my idea through the pose.

What is your artistic approach and sources of inspiration?

My approach is to draw constantly with pencil, charcoal, chalk, ink and all kinds of materials. To make many sketches and drawings of the idea until I find the right sound. My inspiration comes from life itself. I draw what excites me, without thinking whether the audience will like it or not, because when the artist is honest, things work out, even if you draw sad or ugly things.

What do you think is the social and cultural significance of the ex-libris?

The social significance, as well as the cultural one, is enormous for people who love literature, fine arts and strive to get to know the world through the cultural paradigms created by human civilization. The ex-libris is a miniature graphic, but with enormous power, which has a positive connotation and can only enrich the different layers of society, show the positive and negative features of society, inspire and make people think about the different problems that stand before us people to solve. The ex-libris can sound more elegant, like a small graphic, it can also sound more poster-like, with a synthesized idea, it can also sound symbolic as a sign and this is its power, as long as the narrative is for the person who owns it.

What would you like to say about collecting bookplates?

Several prerequisites are necessary for collecting bookplates: First, you must love literature, the eternal themes described in various mythologies, through which a person understands and gets to know himself in the colorful palette of characters and hundreds of incidents, which are actually human stories over time. Everyone finds themselves in a certain character from the stories, on which a bookplate could be created.

Second – you must have a passion for collecting, such as collecting philatelic stamps and coins. The collector collects in order to experience and relive each image, each story in the image. Of course, here comes the question of the quality of the image and the aesthetic side of a given bookplate. There are also collectors who learn on the go what is beautiful and what is not so much, because people do not have the same preparation, what is exquisite and valuable and what is more marginal in execution and is done more by inertia, without heart and soul.

The collector of ex-libris is a person who loves fine arts and especially graphics, which is considered the most intellectual genre among the arts. The first art that arose was precisely graphic drawing thousands of years ago. Quite abstractly and conditionally, we can say that the first ex-libris in the history of human civilization were the drawings in the caves, which told the stories of their creator, of their tribe, etc. Back then, there were no books, the pages were the walls of the caves, on which man wrote his stories, through various symbols, which later turned into letters – the most perfect graphics. For example, the letter A, in the modern Western world, comes from the depiction of an ox’s head (aleph-ox), which was taken from the first revolutionary alphabet – the Phoenician one. And all the other letters were a story about a given subject – betin -house, lamed -goad, etc. Of course, they have evolved in their depiction, reaching perfection among the Latins, in the Roman Empire. But they enter the Western world from Phoenicia, through Ancient Greece, and up to the present day. We can conclude that the collector of bookplates is an intellectual who, through the exchange of bookplates, seeks the eternal answer – what is Beauty. And perhaps we will not be wrong if we say that Beauty is in everything that tells about our humble earthly path.

What are the differences between traditional and digital bookplate design?

As an artist who created the first fully digital work in the history of Bulgarian graphics, I can say that the difference is in the tool with which you create the image. In fine arts, the technical side of the issue appears after a work is evaluated. Digital art is also closely related to photography, which was discovered by artists. Humanity has strived to reach perfection in imitating Nature, and authorial photography, digital imaging give the true artist limitless opportunities for work. So for me, the quality of an image, its authorship and originality are important, and the method of creation is only the technical side of the issue. In both cases, the artist can fail if he is not clear about which is the better tool for his Idea. For beauty, it does not matter how it is created – if it brings delight, excitement and reflection on the given topic, then the work is done well.

What do you foresee for bookplate art in the future?

If we follow the development of different genres in art, we will see that each genre has peaks and valleys. This depends on the development of the world. Aesthetic criteria are determined by the ethical norms in the development of human civilization, in different societies. An example can be given with the hippie movement, etc. to see how social relationships influence the visual arts, in particular the bookplate. If we follow its development from its appearance during the age of knights to the present day, we will see a huge change that is dictated by the development of Civilization. I think that as long as the Book exists, which is increasingly valued by people around the world, the bookplate will exist in parallel with other arts. The magic of the short story, such as the bookplate, will always have a magical and attractive power for that part of the people around the world who are looking for answers to the eternal questions about Life.

What is your experience in art, what do you want to tell?

Art is a path that everyone walks in their own way. It is an individual act of contact with the Creator. I strive to be honest with myself, as well as with the viewer, sharing what excites me. Experience accumulates imperceptibly, without you looking for it on purpose. It is the result of your personal contact of your soul with the white sheet, and when it reaches the heart of a viewer, you have climbed another step towards Him. The traces that remain after you on the white sheet are your experience, your confession and suffering. 18.06.2025 Sofia -Istanbul

* Within the scope of the 100th anniversary of the founding of our Republic, “100 Ex-libris Exhibition in the 100th Year” will be opened at Istinye University Vadi Campus on Friday, 27 October 2023 at 15:30. The exhibition is a selection of original works by internationally master artists from the collection of the Istanbul Ex-libris Museum. The exhibition will be open until 12 November.

We believe that this exhibition, curated by Hasip Pektaş, faculty member of the Faculty of Communication and director of the Istanbul Ex-libris Museum, will contribute to the recognition and dissemination of ex-libris and increase interest in books and art. This exhibition is an event of respect and gratitude to Atatürk and the Republic he founded, who showed the value he attached to art and artists by saying “A nation without art means that one of its life veins has been severed”.

* Aziz Sancar EX-LIBRIS STORY
By Şükrü Ertürk

When the Aziz Sancar Nobel Prize commemorative stamp, published by the PTT in December 2015, was shared on Facebook, many comments were made. With the interesting interpretation of Yusuf Keş, “The best portrait painter in engraving Şükrü Ertürk, a job fell on our teacher, a beautiful engraving will make a stamp for a lifetime”, the perception that a new stamp will be issued must have been created. Unfortunately, this proposal could not be met, could not be realized. Unfortunately, we have not had a printing house that can print taille-douce engraving stamps in Turkey until now, and I had not received a request for a new stamp from the PTT.

In this case, I decided to make Ex-libris in the name of Aziz Sancar. I asked for help from Orhan Bursalı, a close friend of Aziz Sancar, writer for Cumhuriyet Newspaper, who wrote the book about the story of Aziz Sancar and Nobel, and attended the award ceremony regarding the visuals I would use. I was very happy when I sent Orhan Bursalı Aziz Sancar with the message that included my idea of making an ex-libris, expressing my visual need, and my ex-libris attached. I received a message from America, with the images attached, with thanks. I started exlibris.

In the book Aziz Sancar and the Road to Nobel, his life story that started in Mardin and continued in Istanbul and later in the USA, his family, his student years, his research at the university, the difficulties he faced, his successes, his struggle against his rivals, his patience in scientific research it was very impressive.

He was expressing his patriotism with the sentence “I am the Artifact of the Republic of Turkey, I am loyal to Atatürk and the principles of the Republic”, and proved his patriotism by donating the Nobel’s gold medal to the Anıtkabir museum. He was proving his commitment to Anatolian culture by naming his award-winning article “Yunus Emre Epic”. He showed his consistent, scientistic attitude towards the Central Bank, demanding that the wrongly drawn DNA helix on the reverse of the 5 TL banknote be corrected.

I thought in many ways how to visualize this amazing success story, strong personality. I looked at the videos explaining it, the visuals of DNA repair. I found the majestic portrait I needed online. In the photo, it was as if his left eyelid had drooped due to the ailment. In other photos, the eyes looked healthy. I straightened my eyelid and directed my gaze towards the viewer.

I gave priority to portraits in my designs, placing Seljuk starry motifs in the background, as I was of the opinion that portraits would provide the best personal belonging in ex-libris. Aziz Sancar’s portrait, when the hexagonal helices in the DNA repair model overlapped with the six-armed Seljuk starling, the two main images of the design became clear. The electron microscope he used in his research and experiments at nanoscale and the light collider called synchotron, and Yunus Emre’s lines “Step by step forward / Into five realms / Eighteen thousand hijabs / I passed in a mountain”, which coincided with his journey on the DNA mountain, were other visuals.

I mixed all this in my mind. In the sketches I made in pencil and later in the computer environment, the vertical axis symmetrical design dominated. The portrait on the main axis continued with the negative lines with a six-star star on the right side, I put the portraits of his parents in the hexagons. The starlings moved to the left of the portrait, turning into a mountain of DNA as it descended. The negative striation helix emerging from it merged into the DNA repair pattern. I placed the mini portraits of Aziz Sancar in two circles on the DNA mountain in this section. Below I placed a network of brain cells around the circular DNA repair model. On the right side, under the shoulder, the six-point star continued with positive lines around the Nobel medal. I placed Ayyıldız on the middle axis, Yunus Emre’s first stanza on the road below, and the light collider in elliptical appearance on top of that. A single line ex-libris Aziz Sancar writing at the bottom, my ŞE logo at the bottom.

I sent this design to Aziz Sancar to get his opinions and thoughts. He expressed his appreciation and thanks. When I suggested adding Atatürk’s signature, I got the answer that would be great. The first stage has been finalized.

After the copper mold was prepared for engraving, each unit in the design was individually transferred and engraved. Linear perspective was applied so that the portrait could be in the foreground. The lines, letter lengths, line thicknesses and depths of the poem were processed with a certain transition. The relationship between lines and tonal values was checked with proof prints made with one color. At the end of the engraving process, color proof prints were started. It was taken into account that the colors and tonal values were compatible with the story. Eight different inks were rubbed into their parts from dark to light and cleaned with small plastic spatulas. The specially coated paper of Hahne Mühle was printed with the meticulousness of banknotes. All these transactions took place over a period of 18 months.

The first rehearsal edition of this ex-libris, which is a gift from my heart to Aziz Sancar, the work of Atatürk’s Turkey, in return for his achievements, coincided with Atatürk’s commemoration day on November 10, I shared it on Facebook. Then I made 10 original prints and sent them to America.
