The first Ex-libris Museum was founded in the IMOGA Graphic Arts Museum with the contributions of Prof. Dr. Süleyman Saim Tekcan in Turkey in 2008 in Istanbul. Later, the Ex-libris Collection, which was removed from IMOGA, was a faculty member of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Işık University. Dr. Hasip Pektaş has been preserved for a long time. Museum was created for the second time with the support of the Rector Prof. Dr. Nafiye Güneç Kıyak and Rector Prof. Dr. Şirin Tekinay at Işık University in 2014. This valuable collection of Istanbul Ex-libris Society was exhibited at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Maslak. Preparations were made to obtain the approval of the Ministry of Culture, but the rectors left their duties before they could not win the official museum identity. The next administration does not show interest and the President of the Istanbul Ex-libris Society. Prof. Dr. Hasip Pektaş upon the division of from the university, the collection was removed from the university in 2017 with the decision of the Board of Directors of the Society. Although Işık University was an interlocutor in 2018, Istanbul Ex-libris Society, Prof.Dr. Dr. Hasip Pektaş filed a lawsuit. The court continues and the case subject to the case is kept in a warehouse of 12,628 Ex-libris. If the court remains in the association, the collection will be included in the museum.

Istanbul Ex-libris Museum was established for the third time and permanently with the support art -loving business person and Selcuk Ecza Holding Chairman of the Board of Directors M. Sonay Gürgen at Selçuk Ecza Holding in 2019. Istanbul Ex-libris Museum, With the approval of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism dated 15.09.2020 and numbered 60960384-151.01.01.01-E.680776, it has gained the status of a private “Ex-libris Museum”.

Selçuk Ecza Holding makes valuable contributions to education and culture with the buildings it has built in addition to its wide services in the pharmaceutical sector. Selcuk Ecza Holding has made an important contribution to Ex-libris art in 2018 with this awareness of social responsibility. Holding, Prof.Dr. Dr. Hasip Pektaş also hosted the International Ex-libris competition on “Pharmacy, Pharmaceuticals and Human Health”.

In addition, the Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Communication of the TRNC, Department of Visual Arts and Visual Communication. Dr. Senih Cavusoglu and Polish Katowice Silesia University Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Dr. Krzysztof Marek Bak cooperation in the 2019 Spirit International Exlibris Competition and Konya Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture in 2021, the international “Derviş” Yunus Emre Ex-libris Competition was donated to our museum. In addition, in 2022, Istinye University, Selcuk Ecza Deposu and Istanbul Exlibris Society organized by the 5th International Exlibris Competition organized by 452 artists from 36 countries with 1,170 Exlibris enriched the collection of 550 Exlibris donated to the museum. If the case mentioned in this 3,080 Exlibis is won, 12,628 Ex-libris will be added and a total of 15,708 Ex-libris will be submitted to the use of art lovers.

Founded as one of the 10 museums in the world, the Istanbul Exlibris Museum will of course live with the contributions of Selcuk Ecza Deposu and Istanbul Ex-libris Society; In our country, there will be a cultural center in the context of the recognition, widespread and development of the ex-libis.

With this small ex-libris collection, 250 books, catalogs and 27 thesis will be the source of those who research about Ex-libris.

The aims of the Istanbul Exlibris Museum;

1. To share ex-libris, to register for the future, to create our cultural heritage, to protect it and to ensure that art lovers can easily reach the ex-libris,

2. Adding new ex-libris to this collection, which is valuable enough to attract the attention of visitors of all ages, to enlarge,

3. Students from all levels of educational institutions in Turkey to visit the museum and participate in the workshops and become new representatives of this art,

4. Creating education for artists and designers for preparing for international ex-libris competitions,

5. To give seminars/conferences for those who want to learn, implement and evaluate Ex-libis and to make workshops for those interested.

6. To create an opportunity to cultural enrichment.

About the Author

Hasip Pektaş was born in Ermenek in 1953. He has been working as a Professor at İstinye University, Faculty of Communication in the Visual Communication Design Department in Istanbul. He wrote a book about "Ex-libris". He has also been working hard to make ex-libris well-known in Turkey. He organized 5 International Ex-libris Competitions and 33rd FISAE International Ex-libris Congress in 2010 in Istanbul. He founded Istanbul Ex-libris Museum in Selçuk Ecza Holding in 2019.
